- 1.Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- 2.In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the cold vegan butter and use your hands or a pastry cutter to work it into the flour mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 3.Add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture comes together to form a dough. Shape the dough into a disk and wrap it in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- 4.In a large skillet, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- 5.Transfer the apple mixture to a 9-inch pie dish. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Place the dough over the apples and tuck the edges of the dough into the sides of the dish.
- 6.Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are bubbling. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
lightbulb_outline Tips
- Make sure the vegan butter is very cold when you add it to the flour mixture. This will help create a flaky crust.
- If the dough is too crumbly, add a little more ice water, one tablespoon at a time.
- You can use any type of apple for this recipe, but I recommend using a firm apple like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
