- 1.Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
- 2.In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3.Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- 4.Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
- 5.Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
- 6.In a large bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually beat in powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Beat in heavy cream until light and fluffy.
- 7.Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread with frosting. Top with second cake layer and spread remaining frosting over top and sides of cake. Sprinkle chocolate shavings over top of cake.
- 8.Slice and serve!
